Crossley Evans – Rail Freight in Bradford

Crossley Evans operates the last rail freight siding in Bradford district. Located in Shipley, the site is under threat from a supermarket development by Network Rail who want to sell the site.

In their recent fightback against the development Crossley Evans has unveiled a brand-new development plan that could revolutionise the site and increase employment to 200.

The site would deliver over 10,000 tonnes of freight onto the rail network. This is the only site in Bradford that can deliver this level of freight effectively onto the rail network. There are currently 3 sites being pursued by developers in Shipley, more information is available here.

BRUG supports the continuation of rail freight in Bradford and would support this scheme.

Overhead line problem in Keighley

Overhead wire problems are causing disruption at Keighley.

Because of this, buses are replacing trains between Skipton and Shipley, with journey times extended by up to 30 minutes. This is expected to continue until approximately 08:30.

Edward Lyons QC 1926 – 2010

The former Bradford MP Edward Lyons died at the end of April, and the following letter was submitted to the Telegraph and Argus by Mr Derek Crabtree:

The recent death of Edward Lyons QC should not be allowed to pass by without remembering that he was a good friend to Bradford.

The Glasgow-born lawyer who lived most of his life in Leeds was an outstanding MP in Bradford for several years.

I particularly remember his valiant efforts in Parliament to persuade British Railways to permit the Thames-Clyde Express to stop at Shipley as it passed through.

That would have allowed Bradford folk a good rail connection to London, the Midlands and Scotland without changing.

He succeeded in getting trains between Leeds and Glasgow to stop at Shipley, but at the same time, the trains from Glasgow ceased going beyond Leeds.

It was not all he wanted, although it did help to make Shipley a little more important as a railhead for Bradford.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, son John, daughter Jane and four grandchildren.

Problems on the Airedale line

29th October – Airedale Cancellations

Rail services were delayed this morning due to a signal failures in Armley. Passengers from Shipley and stations to Skipton had to wait up-to one hour before a North/West-bound service was sent from Forster Square up-to Skipton.  The first services departing Shipley towards Skipton didn’t leave until 8:05am (from Forster Square). – an hours delay.

Leeds bound commuters had the option of travelling in coaches from Shipley, or via Forster Square and then walking upto the Interchange to catch the Leeds trains.

These problems would be over-come by Bradford Crossrail! or as we now also call it: The Armley Junction bypass!
